The world’s strangest billiard game!

Rules of Skomager

Start a new game:
Skomager is a game for 2 or more players. Each player starts with 60 points. The aim is to score as many points as possible for yourself, whilst preventing your opponent(s) from scoring. The first player to reach zero is the winner.
A blackboard/chalkboard is traditionally used to keep score. To decide who plays first, one player makes a column for each participant, and names are placed in those columns in a random order.

Scoring:

Red/Pale
3 balls are used in the game of skomager. 1 red cue ball, and two white object balls.
When the cue ball makes contact with both white balls, and at least one ball has made contact with a cushion, 4 points are scored. This is known as ‘red’.
When the cue ball hits a white ball, and that white ball then makes contact with the second white ball, and at least one ball has hit a cushion, 4 points are scored. This is known as ‘pale’.
If ‘red’ or ‘pale’ occurs without a ball hitting a cushion, it is a foul. The penalty is 6 points plus the 4 points for ‘red’ or ‘pale’. These points are subtracted from the opponents’ scores.

Bal in pocket:
2 points are scored for pocketing a white ball. The white ball is then respotted on the ‘white spot’ at the opposite end of the table from where the other white ball lies.
If the red cue ball rests on this white spot, the white ball is respotted after the next shot is played. It is respotted on the white spot it was originally going to be placed on, even if the other white ball is now in the same half of the table. In some places, if a white ball should leave the table after having made contact with a pin, it is considered pocketed

Pins/ Pin field:
After a pin is knocked down, it is returned to its place only if this can be done without touching a ball. Only pins which have been knocked down are returned to their place. If a ball or another pin displaces one of the pins, but it is still standing, it must stay in its new position even if it is outside the pin field. Knocking down a pin scores 2 points.
The centre pin (also known as the ‘king’ pin) scores 6 points if it is the only pin to be knocked down, and all other pins are on the table.

Highest possible score:
The maximum score that can be made on one shot is 24.
This is done by scoring red or pale, pocketing both the white balls, and knocking down all the pins the first time a white ball makes contact with them.
4 points are scored for the red or pale (you can only score 4 points, you can not score double).
2 points are scored for each pocketed white ball.
16 points are scored for knocking down all the pins at once (known as ‘one pass’). This only applies if all the pins are overturned the first time a white ball hits the pins, and the other white ball is outside the pin field. If overturned by both balls, or the second time a ball contacts the pins, only 10 points are scored..

The game ends:
When there are only two players left, you need to finish with pin/pins or the opponent’s foul.

Penalty Point:

Other fouls:
When playing a shot, one foot must be on the floor.
Use of spiders/rests is not allowed.
At least one ball must always touch a cushion (The pocket counts as a cushion, for instance, when potting a white ball)

DIRECT:
When knocking over pins, the cue ball must first have made contact with a cushion. Failure to do so is a penalty known as ‘direct’. 6 points for ‘direct’ as well as any other points made on the shot are subtracted from opponents’ scores.

Touching a ball
If a player touches the red cue ball (with a hand, sleeve, cue, etc.) it is a foul. The penalty is 6 points. It is not necessary for the ball to have moved to be a foul.

Missing Pins:
If a pin or pins have been removed from the table because a ball lies in their place, they must be replaced as soon as possible. If the next player to shoot does not notice, and plays a shot before the pins are replaced, it is a foul. The penalty is 6 points, as well as 2 points per pin, and any other points scored on the shot

Highest possible penalty:
Direct, one pass, red or pale, and both cue balls pocketed results in a penalty of 30 points

Won Game:
If all 3 balls are pocketed in one shot, the game is won

Balls leaving the table:
If the red cue ball leaves the table without having made contact with a white ball, it is a foul. The penalty is 6 points, plus an additional 2 points for the ball making contact with the floor.
If the white ball is contacted before the cue ball leaves the table, it is also a foul, but the penalty is just 2 points, as well as any other points scored on the shot.

Playing out of turn:
If a player strokes when it is not his / her turn, this will be penalized as DIRECT + the points they may have made. Then they are allowed to strike again and the order is continued from there.

The rebound rule:
This rule is used in big tournaments or by mutual agreement. Should the red cue ball not make contact with a white ball, it is a foul. The penalty is 6 points as well as anything else made on the shot. The next player can ask the one who fouled to play again from the current position. This ensures that an advantage can not be gained by playing a foul shot.

Some more exceptions!
In some places, red scores 8 points!
In some places, pale scores no points at all!
Some plays with the ruel that White bal shot of the billard are considered as was the white in pocket!

It’s best to ask for the local rules should they not play to the ones written here

Vocabulary:
DIRECT = 6 minus point, and those points get the opponents subtracted from their points.
Penalty = Minus points the opponents get subtracted from their points.
One Pass = when a white ball knocks down all the pins at once, and the other white ball is outside the pin field
